Purpose of Scheme

The purpose of the Alternative Entry Scheme is to encourage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through the process of applying to study at The University of Queensland.  
 
The Alternative Entry application process considers a range of factors in addition to formal education, such as your employment history, academic abilities, personal interests and references. Under the Alternative Entry program, applicants are eligible for up to an additional 5 bonus ranks or OP equivalent to assist with their entry into The University of Queensland.

Eligibility

All applicants must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. All applications for admission must be made online through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) and the applicant must list UQ as a preference.
 
Once you have nominated UQ as a preference in QTAC, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit will be notified and will send you an Alternative Entry Scheme application package for your perusal.

Applicants are required to provide the following information:
  • Alternative Entry Scheme Application Form;
  • Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status under the common seal of an incorporated community organisation;
  • Personal resume (including the contact details of at least two referees);
  • Academic transcripts/certificates from all previous enrolments in educational courses or programs;
  • Personal statement outlining the reasons for wishing to study medicine (statement to be no longer than 1 A4 page in length.
Desirable
  • Reference letters - evidence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement;
  • Supporting evidence of any academic or community service awards or achievements relevant to your application.

How to Apply

Applicants must apply for admission to UQ online through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Please ensure that you have listed UQ as a preference and have identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent.  
Once you received an Alternative Entry Scheme application package, you will need to submit your application and supporting documents to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit.
