The University of Queensland offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies for credit to any student eligible to enter the University.
A full program is available, but many international students come to Australia for only one or two semesters and focus on four (one semester) or eight (two semesters) of the 14 courses taught by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit. Run by Indigenous Australians, much of the Unit's teaching is undertaken by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, who provide diverse Indigenous perspectives on the issues they cover.
Indigenous Studies Program
The course content is interdisciplinary and is designed to accommodate the requirements of a broad range of students, especially those with backgrounds in the arts, humanities, and the social sciences. The Unit's courses examine Indigenous Australian worldviews and approaches to knowledge, music and dance, Aboriginal women, politics, Torres Strait Islander studies and issues in research with Indigenous people. Two independent project courses allow students to pursue topics of special interest in more detail. Courses offered by the Unit include:
Semester One (February to May)
ABTS1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives
Survey of major themes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective. Thorough introduction to various government departments and agencies involved in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.
ABTS2010 Aboriginal Women
The course addresses historical and contemporary issues identified as relevant by Aboriginal women today.
ABTS2040 Black Australian Literature A
The course looks at the writing of Indigenous Australians and the way in which it reflects and recreates dimensions of Indigenous Australian consciousness.
ABTS2080 Independent Project in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies I
Supervised independent research in an area of Indigenous Australian studies.
ABTS3000 Aboriginal Politics and Political Issues
A critical examination of the underlying features of the Aboriginal political movement in contemporary Australian society.
ABTS7000 Introductory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies for Australian Studies PostgraduatesSurvey of major themes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective. Thorough introduction to various government departments and agencies involved in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.
Semester Two (July to October)
ABTS2000 Torres Strait Islander Studies
Detailed examination of selected topics in traditional and contemporary Torres Strait Islander society and culture from a Torres Strait Islander perspective.
ABTS2020 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Approaches to Knowledge
A detailed examination of selected topics in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander society.
ABTS2050 Black Australian Literature B
The study of Indigenous novelists, playwrights and storytellers. This provides a foundation for testing theoretical and ideological persuasions of Black Australian critics and creative writers.
ABTS2090 Independent Project in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies II
Supervised independent research in an area of Indigenous Australian studies.
ABTS2102 Aboriginal Music: Performing, Place, Power & Identity Understanding the way musical patterns are exhibited in Indigenous Australian cultural systems. Issues covered include gender, world music, change and enviroment.
ABTS3020 Working with Indigenous People
The course examines the conceptual and practical issues that arise in working amongst Indigenous people.
ABTS7002 Tranforming Conflict between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Peoples
This course explores conflict transformation processes such as peacebuilding, reconciliation and alternative dispute resolution through the lens of relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
A full-time study workload is four of these courses per semester. All courses have equal weighting.
